What does the OORC do?
Advocacy
The OORC is the most active trail advocacy group for mountain biking in Arkansas. We have been the driving force in keeping trails open, building new trail systems, and gaining access to existing and proposed trails. Our most recent accomplishments include gaining access to Hobbs State Park near Rogers, AR and Lake Wedington near Fayetteville, AR. In 2007 we hope to have a signed and mapped trail system at the Buffalo Headwaters near Red Star, AR. If you would like to help the OORC make Arkansas one of the best mountain bike destinations in the U.S., become a member today. See you on the trail.
Ride
We ride in some of the most beautiful places in Arkansas. Every month the OORC leads a ride at a different trail. Some of our favorite destinations include Syllamo Trail System, Hobbs State Park—Conservation Area, Lake Leatherwood, and the Buffalo Headwaters. We also lead rides in the Ouachitas, Arkansas River Valley, southern Missouri, and western Oklahoma. Throughout the spring, summer, and fall we lead rides Wednesday afternoon starting at the Highroller Cyclery in Fayetteville, AR. We offer rides for every level of rider from beginner to expert. Each ride is rated based on skill level and endurance level. You’re welcome to join us on our next club ride.
Trail Work
We currently maintain trails at Lake Fayetteville, Lake Wedington, Lake Wilson, Hobbs State Park—Conservation Area, Devil’s Den State Park, Lake Leatherwood, Buffalo Headwaters, Lake Sequoyah, and the Piney Creek Headwaters. Our trail work trips include everything from clipping trail corridors to building bridges for creek crossings. All this effort wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of volunteers like you. Is there a trail near you that needs a little work? When was the last time you found a tree across your favorite piece of singletrack? Is there a section of trail you dread, because it’s too steep or too wet? Take some time to help us out on our next trail work day.
Events
We promote three of Northwest Arkansas’ favorite events: The Park to Park Ride, Headwaters Challenge, and the Eureka Springs Fat Tire Festival. The Headwaters Challenge held in January is the Ozarks’ premier mountain bike challenge, pitting riders against nearly 50 miles of rugged Boston Mountain terrain. The Park to Park Ride is one of the OORC’s annual fund raisers held every April. The mountain bike ride ventures into the rugged Boston Mountains on a 25-30 mile adventure. The Eureka Springs Fat Tire Festival, a NORBA sanctioned event held in July, is a three day celebration of mountain biking that includes cross country racing, downhill, and trials. We even have a race for the kids. The Fatty Fest is a family oriented event that offers something for everyone.
